Reduce dental anxiety and discomfort…
with the help of Dentistry Compounding
Visits to the dentist don’t have to cause anxiety and discomfort. Dentistry Compounding is one of the best tools to help fight fears and ease dental anxiety.
What is Dentistry Compounding?
Simply put, Dentistry Compounding is a safe and natural method of preparing customized medications for your dental needs by a qualified pharmacist. From a child getting a cavity filled to a senior getting fitted for a crown, each dental patient is unique and may benefit from a custom-compounded medication.
At 24 Wellness RX, our highly trained pharmacists will customize medications in conjunction with your dentist to suit your specific needs. With a wide variety of options, we can compound medication dosage forms and strengths that are not normally commercially available. Some of the medications we can formulate include:
- Topical anesthetics
- Lollipops to treat oral thrush
- Lip balms for lesions caused by a virus
- Topical analgesics/muscle relaxants
- Oral sedation in the form of freezer pops and lollipops
- Non-staining antibacterial mouth rinses
- Mouth rinses for ulcers, chemotherapy-induced oral swelling and sores, or to prevent oral bleeding during dental procedures for patients who are taking anticoagulants
- Lozenges to help prevent the patient from gagging
- Dry socket preparations
Oral medications for children can also be compounded using pleasant tasting flavors, including chocolate and cherry! In addition, custom formulations can be prepared to exclude preservatives, dyes, alcohol and other additives for sensitive patients – and for those with allergies.
Does Dentistry Compounding replace Sedation Dentistry?
In many cases, compounded meds may relax a patient enough to eliminate the need for sedation dentistry, such as nitrous oxide. Of course, the more invasive dental procedures such as tooth extraction or root canals will typically require sedation dentistry. However, dentistry compounding offers the benefit of customization for a patient’s unique needs, without worry of side effects from sedation.
The best way to determine what’s best for you and/or your child is to discuss the dental procedure beforehand with your dentist, along with your unique requirements. For example, a special needs patient may benefit from a combination of compounded meds and some form of sedation dentistry.
